Noun atau kata benda merupakan salah satu part of speech (unsur kalimat dalam bahasa Inggris) yang dapat berfungsi sebagai subjek maupun objek. Dari segi cara penghitungannya, noun dibagi menjadi dua jenis yaitu Countable Noun (kata benda yang bisa dihitung) dan Uncountable Noun (kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung).

Pengertian Countable Noun
Countable Noun adalah kata benda yang dapat dihitung dengan mudah. Contoh: book (buku). Kita bisa mengatakan 1 buku, 2 buku, dan sebagainya. Berikut ini adalah beberapa contoh countable noun:

Countable noun terbadi menjadi dua macam, yaitu: singular countable (dapat dihitung tunggal) dan plural countable (dapat dihitung jamak). Pada bentuk Plural, perubahan bentuk kata bendanya mengikuti aturan regular (pola beraturan) atau irregular (pola tidak beraturan).

Pengertian Uncountable Noun
Uncountable noun adalah kata benda yang tidak bisa dihitung dengan sendirinya, harus dengan alat bantu seperti liter, bottle, dan sebagainya. Kita tidak tidak dapat membaginya menjadi beberapa bagian. Contoh: kata “milk/susu”. Kita bisa menghitungnya dengan alat bantu yaitu liter atau botol, contoh: “bottles of milk” or “litres of milk”, Tapi kita tidak bisa menghitung “milk” sendiri. Berikut contoh uncountable nouns:

Plural Uncountable Noun

Perbedaan Countable Noun dan Uncountable Noun
■ Countable Noun: kata benda yang memiliki bentuk tunggal (singular) dan jamak (plural) dan dapat dihitung.
Misalnya kata pen dan pens.
1. There is a pen on the table. (singular)
2. There are pens on the table. (plural)
■ Uncountable Noun: kata benda yang hanya memiliki satu bentuk saja, digunakan untuk tunggal dan jamak.
Misalnya kata milk.
1. There is no milk in the fridge.
2. There is a lot of milk in your glass.
